Infant Mortality and Asians and Pacific Islanders

  • Among Asian/Pacific Islanders, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the fourth leading cause of infant mortality.
  • Asian/Pacific Islander women generally have lower infant mortality rates than the overall population, however statistics for Asian American subgroups are very limited for this topic.
  • In 2014, Native Hawaiian mothers were 8.7 times more likely to smoke during pregnancy as compared to all Asian American mothers.
  • In 2014, Native Hawaiian mothers were twice as likely to receive late or no prenatal care as compared to non-Hispanic white mothers.
