National Observances

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) commemorates several national observances each year to highlight health-related issues impacting the populations we serve, including racial and ethnic minority populations and American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). These observances provide an opportunity to share reliable, data-driven information and resources that can help improve health outcomes and ensure that all individuals, families, and communities are healthy and thriving.

2025 Theme

Individuals and organizations can join HHS OMH in “Improving Health Outcomes Through Communities and Connections” by adopting this theme in your 2025 communications campaigns and amplifying HHS OMH communications for the following annual observances:

  • National Sickle Cell Awareness Month (September)
  • National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15)
  • Native American Heritage Month (November)

More information and resources related to each observance are added to the HHS OMH website throughout the year. Follow OMH on X, Instagram, and Facebook to receive updates when more information about each observance is released.

How to Start Improving Health Outcomes
Through Your Communities and Connections

Consider

Considering health literacy levels, cultural backgrounds, and linguistic needs is a step toward improving the health and well-being of racial and ethnic minority and AI/AN communities. When individuals are provided with culturally and linguistically appropriate services and information, they can create healthier outcomes for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Connect

Connecting multiple sources of trusted data and information, like the OMH Population Profiles, can help develop comprehensive, data-driven policies, programs, and practices that benefit racial and ethnic minority and AI/AN populations.

Collaborate

Collaborating with local, state, and federal partners may help identify and provide the resources needed to support efforts to eliminate health disparities.

Contribute

Contributing to conversations on social media is a great way to raise awareness about the health and wellbeing of racial and ethnic minority and AI/AN communities. Follow OMH on X (in English and in Spanish), Instagram, and Facebook and use #ImprovingHealthOutcomes and #PreventChronicDiseases to share how you and your organization are making a difference.
