Infant Mortality and American Indians/Alaska Natives

  • In 2022, the infant mortality rate for American Indians/Alaska Natives was two times the rate for non-Hispanic whites.1
  • American Indian/Alaska Native infants were 3.2 times more likely to die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and 1.8 times more likely to die from congenital malformations than non-Hispanic white infants in 2022.2
  • In 2022, American Indian/Alaska Native mothers were almost three times more likely to receive late or no prenatal care than non-Hispanic white mothers.3
  • American Indian/Alaska Native mothers were two times more likely to have smoked during pregnancy than non-Hispanic white mothers in 2022.4
