State Partnership Grant Program to Improve Minority Health $140,000 Shauna Hicks, MHS (803) 898-0868 hickssp@dhec.sc.gov
This State Partnership project seeks to translate, enhance and implement evidence-based strategies to increase seasonal influenza vaccinations among racial and ethnic minorities in South Carolina, particularly among African-Americans. Racial and ethnic minorities in South Carolina are disproportionately less likely to receive influenza vaccines when compared to the white population. To address this issue, this project will identify stakeholders and partners, and build and enhance partnership efforts. The project will assess both consumer and provider perceptions, knowledge, attitudes and beliefs toward flu vaccine availability, accessibility, safety and usefulness. The project will also assess health care providers' readiness for facilitating the flu vaccine for minority populations through increased and more effective patient education, recommendation, and/or administration of flu vaccine. An evaluation will be conducted to assess if there is a decrease in the incidence of influenza among the target population as a result of this project. Based on RE-AIM evaluation framework, the project will measure the number and location of all program activities using GIS mapping, conduct health risk appraisals and a survey of health care providers, and develop a client database.
