Abstract

The Magnolia Model Program addresses the disproportionate health burdens afflicting minority populations by engaging in educational community campaigns as well as expanding the services available to minority populations across Mississippi. This project will focus on hepatitis B in the Vietnamese communities, infant mortality among all minority groups, cardiovascular disease mortality, diabetes and hypertension among African-American men and women. To this end, the Mississippi Department of Health will partner with the Mississippi Department of Mental Health (MDMH), University of Mississippi, Jackson State University and Morehouse School of Medicine. Through this partnership, they will conduct educational campaigns, assess disease prevalence and conduct pregnancy prevention campaigns. It will also assess providers who have relationships with the different communities, engage in awareness campaigns, hold Hepatitis screenings and convene legislative hearings on healthcare reform in order to promote public health policies. In order to determine if such outcomes are reached, data will be collected from pre/post surveys, key informant interviews and town hall meetings. It will include information on the number of participants in different communities, the number of participants screened for hepatitis B and assessment scores.
