The Minnesota Office of Minority and Multicultural Health aims to strengthen the health and wellness of racial/ethnic, cultural and tribal populations in Minnesota by engaging minority populations in health systems, mutual learning and actions essential for achieving health parity and optimal wellness. The office provides leadership on health disparities, oversees the statewide Eliminating Health Disparities Initiative and many other health disparity related projects. It also serves as an avenue for community members to engage in policy development.

This State Partnership project seeks to improve minority health data and the evaluation of health disparities. It will focus on improving the consistency and quality of racial and ethnic health data collection on minority populations. Minnesota's minority populations continue to experience some of the greatest health issues along with a lack of high quality data on the health status of these populations. To address this issue, the project will improve and expand the collection of health data on populations of color by identifying the gaps in racial and ethnic data collection, identifying the information needs and data resources, and establishing recommended standards for the collection of the data. The project will also expand the inventory of data to include databases containing aggregate statistics from health plans, providers and other organizations. In addition, the project will assess the need for data by community organizations in order to help them develop programs for their communities. Finally, the program will establish community dialogue on the overall need for health data. The intended outcomes include strengthening data infrastructure and the capacity to analyze health disparities and creating stronger partnerships with communities of color to facilitate data collection and utilization. An evaluation will be conducted to collect process and outcome data, such as the number of data sets that include health status data by race/ethnicity, the percentage of aggregate datasets that use a recommended format for collecting the data, the number of training participants who demonstrate increased knowledge of data analysis as a result of the training and the number of publications and dissemination of reports on minority health.
