The Guam Office of Minority Health's mission is to achieve health equity for the people of Guam by eliminating health disparities in Guam through the provision of culturally and linguistically competent services.
Program to Reduce Health Disparities in Cancer, Obesity and Overweight and to Increase Sensitivity in Diversity in Health Care $140,000
This State Partnership project seeks to reduce health disparities in cancer, obesity and overweight within the Guam population. More specifically, the project will target breast and cervical cancers, which are considered the second and fourth-leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women. In addition, the project will target a lack of diversity and cultural competence in the health care workforce. Specific activities include fostering territory-wide coordination, collaboration and linkages among government and non-government organizations and individuals that improve minority health disparities in cancer, obesity and overweight, and providing trainings to improve cultural and linguistic competencies of health care workforce.
The intended outcomes include an increase by 10 percent in the number of uninsured women who avail of breast and cervical cancer screening, the development of culturally and linguistically appropriate health information that will increase the awareness about cancer and obesity prevention, and an increase in the amount of cultural competency trainings for at least 50 percent of the priority group. The project will measure the effectiveness of the interventions by tracking the number of community partnerships formalized, the number of plans of action developed, the number of individuals accessing the services, attendance at meetings, along with other performance measures. The evaluation parameters will be developed to effectively gauge both process and outcome measures. The tools that will be used to collect data include pre-test and post-test surveys, intake forms, client satisfaction questionnaire and participant sign-in sheets.
