This project will address the lack of cultural and linguistic proficiency of Hispanic-serving health care providers. The project will provide three types of programs, including internship and fellowship programs for future Hispanic students in nursing, medical science, public health and biomedical science with a vested interest in Hispanic health issues, HSHPS/OMH Student Training Program and HSHPS International Training program. For the internship and fellowship program, two interns and one fellow will intern at the Office of Minority Health for 10 weeks and trainees will be matched with a program mentor. For the other two programs, trainees will also be matched with a program mentor and work on designated projects.
The intended outcomes include increased linguistic and cultural competence among the participants, increased skills in educating and counseling Hispanic patients and increased interest by project participants in working with minority populations in the long-term. In order to determine if such outcomes are reached, data will be collected on a range of performance measures, including the number of participants with increased cultural and linguistic competence, the number of participants who completed their advanced training within three years of the program and the number of participants seeking funding or career positions at OMH or other federal agencies. Other data will also be collected, including the number of media advertisements promoting the program, the number of students who attend and complete the orientation, and feedback received from trainees.
