Hispanic Heritage Month takes place every year from September 15 to October 15. During the month, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) will celebrate the culture, achievements and contributions of Hispanics and Latinos in the United States. In 2020, OMH will focus on raising awareness about the health disparities impacting the Hispanic/Latino community and promote physical activity, healthy nutrition and regular doctor visits to help improve overall health, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. OMH will also join HHS efforts to promote the influenza vaccine during the 2020-2021 flu season and amplify resources about the importance of Hispanic participation in clinical trials as a way to improve the health of the community.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Hispanics in the U.S. are more likely to develop chronic health conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. In light of COVID-19, these underlying medical conditions put Hispanics/Latinos at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
To help to reduce the complications associated with these health disparities, OMH will work with other federal partners during Hispanic Heritage Month to create awareness of the importance of managing health conditions, keeping doctor appointments, handling stress, staying active at home, and getting recommended vaccines such as the flu vaccine, among other healthy behaviors. OMH will also promote messages on the importance of Hispanic/Latino participation in clinical trials as a way to achieve better health.
