The purpose of the Minority Community HIV/AIDS Partnership project is to reduce HIV/AIDS-related health disparities and increase the access and availability of HIV/AIDS preventive services to American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) populations. The project will address the lack of culturally appropriate intervention materials, social and cultural barriers to treatment and preventive services and the lack of awareness of the health status of AI/AN students at Fort Totten Northeastern State University and Candeska Cikana Community College. The project will engage in outreach activities, create for-credit college courses on HIV prevention and employ a sustainable, student task force. The student task force will assist in identifying social and cultural barriers to health care services, as well as engage in peer-to-peer education. The intended outcomes of this project include improving health behaviors among program participants and improving knowledge among health care providers about barriers to health care and the health status of AI/AN, which will inform future. In order to determine if such outcomes are reached, surveys and pre/post tests will be conducted with the students to assess changes in their HIV/AIDS related knowledge, attitudes and behaviors.
