On June 15, USDA and HHS released the final report of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. The report is intended to inform policy and serves as a basis for the 7th edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, expected to publish in late 2010.
External link Working Group Report on Future Research Directions in Childhood Obesity Prevention and Treatment
Childhood overweight and obesity have reached epidemic proportions and are major public health problems nationally and globally. Between 1970 and 2004, the prevalence of overweight almost tripled among U.S. preschoolers and adolescents and quadrupled among children aged 6 to11 years. In 2003-2004, 17.1% of children aged 2 to 19 years were at or above the 95th percentile of Body Mass Index (BMI) compared to 5-6% in the 1970s, and these percentages are higher in non-Hispanic Blacks and Mexican Americans (20.0% and 19.2%) than in Whites (16%).

People living in neighborhoods crowded with fast-food and convenience stores but relatively few grocery or produce outlets are at significantly higher risk of suffering from obesity and diabetes. The authors of this report correlated the responses of nearly 40,000 Californians surveyed in the 2005 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) with the Retail Food Environment Index (RFEI) to determine the prevalence of obesity and diabetes.
