National Infant Mortality Awareness Month – September 2013
September is National Infant Mortality Awareness Month

What can you do to help reduce infant deaths? The SUID/SIDS Federal Working Group is asking for your help in demonstrating proper safe sleep practices in media, outreach and education materials. Read the statement.

September is Infant Mortality Awareness Month and the Office of Minority Health is encouraging everyone to get involved to help reduce the infant mortality rate, particularly in minority communities. The theme is A Healthy Baby Begins with You and You and You.

To actually tackle the issue, healthcare professionals, grandparents, husbands, friends, family members, employers, neighbors and government policymakers can help positively impact infant mortality rates through education, support and policy. Neighborhoods, workplaces, community centers and places of worship can serve as prime locations for awareness building. Combining this with the implementation of culturally competent practices and the utilization of the enhanced CLAS Standards, these components will help decrease infant mortality disparities and bring about health equity. Place, race, and income do matter, but there are ways to account for them and address them in order to see more babies making it past their first birthday to live healthy lives..
