Diabetes and Asians and Pacific Islanders

Asian Americans are 20 percent less likely than non-Hispanic whites to die from diabetes, however they have additional risk factors.

  • Asian Americans are 20 percent more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than non-Hispanic whites.
  • Asians are 60 percent more likely to be diagnosed with end stage renal disease than non-Hispanic whites.
  • In 2009, Asian Americans were 10 percent less likely than non-Hispanic whites to have a retinal eye examination.
